Delta Dental of Minnesota Trust Makes $3.5 Million Gift to the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry

Delta Dental of Minnesota Trust announced today the gift of $ 3.5 million to the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry to fund the only hospital-based dental clinic for children in Minnesota and the most advanced pediatric dental clinic in the Upper Midwest.
The clinic ? named the University of Minnesota Pediatric Dental Clinic, made possible by Delta Dental of Minnesota ? will be located adjacent to the new Amplatz Children?s Hospital on the west bank campus of the University of Minnesota Medical Center. It will be a regional resource for children, including those with complex medical, developmental and emotional needs. It will also be home to an advanced education program in pediatric dentistry and offer dental residents a rich educational experience in an environment of coordinated care, working with pediatricians, nurses, pharmacists, therapists and dieticians.
Delta Dental of Minnesota Trust Board Chair Mike Howe shared, ?We are tremendously excited to support a clinic that will have permanent, long-term benefits for Minnesotans.? Delta Dental of Minnesota Board Chair John Somrock added, ?Every dollar will be invested in bricks and mortar, and the investment will be multiplied many times over through improved oral health for children.?
The gift of $ 3.5 million from Delta Dental of Minnesota is the largest grant in the history of the University?s dental school, according to Dr. Judith Buchanan, interim dean of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Buchanan said, ?This grant will significantly increase access to oral health care for hospitalized children and other children in the community, especially those with complex medical, developmental and emotional conditions. The new clinic will serve as a regional resource for children who need specialized dental care, will allow us to implement new delivery models of dental care, and will provide new opportunities for clinical education of general dentistry students, pediatric dentistry residents, and U of M medical students at the University of Minnesota.?
Howe added, ?This clinic will play a critical role in improving the oral health for Minnesota children, which is right in line with Delta Dental of Minnesota?s commitment to ensuring all of our residents have access to the best oral health care possible. We are very pleased to help bring this great new resource to life.?
Delta Dental of Minnesota Trust was formed out of the proceeds of Delta Dental of Minnesota?s 2009 sale of the dental benefit management company, DeCare Dental. It is designed to support Delta Dental of Minnesota?s mission of improving the oral health of the people in Minnesota and advancing the science and art of oral health in Minnesota.

www.davidafterdentist.com This is a video of my then 7 year old son David in May 2008I had my Flip video camera with me. His mom wasnt able to go becasue of work. I taped some of the morning before the surgery to show her and was already planning to tape afterwards. He had just had a tooth removed due to Hyperdontia or extra tooth. This was taken in the parking lot of the dentist office. He was so out of it. The staff was even laughing. This lasted for a few hours and he was fine. He even laughed at the video that night. He is very smart and always has something interesting to say about many different issues. His philosophical reaction to the medication didnt really suprise us. David is a very good kid and I am blessed to have he and his brother William as sons. This has been a great experience for our family. Thanks for watching.
